Devon Pennant is a young artist from Brixton, South London whose mix of soulful Reggae and contemporary Pop offers an exciting new brand of British Reggae.
In an era when Dancehall continues to sound more and more like an extension of mainstream urban music, Devons truthful lyrics and sassy beats are a breath of fresh air, respectful of decades of Reggae tradition but brave enough to be original at the same time. The use of acoustic guitars in his arrangements adds a definite rootsy authenticity to his style.
When hes not making music Devon is busy writing novels and will soon complete his fourth book. As with his music, his stories combine solid realism, original and unusual themes plus a welcome dose of humour.
Lady of Magics upbeat lyric and cool melody recall the heyday of British Reggae when bands like Aswad, Black Slate and Matumbi broke into the charts for the first time, yet his instinctive tendency towards modern sounds and ideas gives the track a contemporary feel. Chillin on the other hand is classic laid-back reggae groove that celebrates the act of kickin back and relaxing.
Devon is now on a mission to reignite the flame of soulful melodic reggae in the UK and bring it back to a mass audience with his debut album Free due out this spring. First though, Lady of Magic provides a mouth-watering taster, due out March 2006.
Devon Pennants debut album Free will be released on Ravensbourne Records early in 2006.
