As UK electronica label Ominim Records continues to scout the planet for individual and fiercely original expressions of creativity, this time they’ve stumbled on a real gem in the depths of the Belgian hinterland.
Born in Liege and having studied at the Academy of Beaux-Arts in Antwerp, passionate creative Bryan Beckers AKA Oshino has shown interest in many musical styles and influences ranging from Bach, IDM Autechre, Richard D James’s Aphex Twin, Bonobo, Ray Charles Billie Holiday, Flying Lotus and many more.
From the age of sixteen Oshino started experimenting with electronic soundscapes and sampling, taking his inspiration from sounds hear in the street, current life experiences and the visual art that was around him. The results of which have culminated in Cosmic Mood – his first album on Ominim.
The album kicks off with Home who’s vocal intro sets the scene for a plethora of castanets and other percussive elements on this opening track before being seduced by the lush chords of Shy Bird and it’s naïve yet charming melodic motives.
Next up is Mercure with its down-tempo feel which is swiftly followed the album’s main focus, the track Tree for which Ominim visuals maestro Stuart Sinclair has created a most fitting video (see image above and check youtube for the video version). This track in particular shows the breadth of talent emanating from this young and upcoming European creative.
On a more audio cut-up / montage type vibe comes Gemini with it’s brash production technique that mixes hip-hop influenced beats with vocal cut-ups and dense synth chords.
Trilled harp chords set up the next track; Tomorrow, as it weaves a mix of top-end electronic percussion with ambient horn cries and ethereal floating pads – another gem from this most uncompromising of artists.
Other offerings Jupiter with its white noise, Scrabble, seemingly influenced by Bladerunner & finishing track The First Year all show the plethora of ideas emanating from this new contender for the electronica crown.
