Six-piece PopCore/indie band Van Susans release their debut 5-track EP We Could Be Scenery on Beatnik Geek Records this summer having recently played to packed houses at major London venues; Indigo 2 and Clapham Grand.

The band hails from the Bromley / Kent area and can describe their history in a single sound bite as “Poet meets Drummer Boy meets Guitar Hero meets Piano Man and make rock band”. As if to predict their future success the band have already written a novel detailing their rise to fame and for the unabridged version of this story, you can search any good bookstore for ‘The Melodic Life of Van Susan’ priced at the ridiculously handsome sum of £9.99.

With a passion for harmonic melodies and a gift for telling inspired tales of love, this 6-piece band are creating ear-smiling tunes sure to raise your spirits, with tracks like the EP’s opener Cha Cha Bang; a tale of blossoming young love topped off with a rousing chorus that see’s lead vocalist Olly Andrews exclaim “This Girl, she’s crazy, it’s like dancing with a Gun . . .”

Next is the lyrically poignant track Bones, about teenage ‘rights of passage’ and it features some great guitar work from lead guitarist Ed Dullaway. Get Up, Get Out, like the title suggests, tells it just how it is with regards to the burning fire of ambition and the need for each one of us to discover our own journey in our own way.

Another real gem of a track on the EP is Plans with its pop melody and violin arrangement by the band’s string player Caroline Atkinson which perfectly accompanies the song’s lyric about that perfect new love affair which falls apart with the passage of time.

The five-song EP finishes with the track Glow, with its slow build to a final crescendo over which the vocal emotes the sadness of lost love.

Musically the Van Susans conjure up memories of classic artists like The Waterboys and the Levellers with their rich musical arrangements that work well both on record and in a live situation. On the lyrical side, their pop sensibilities and intimate lyric writing prove them to be an exciting and upcoming songwriting talent with a promising future. Meanwhile the band is currently in the studio recording their upcoming album due for release next year.
